This past summer, Camp Gan Israel in Venice welcomed twenty five young adventurers, aged 2 to 13, from diverse Jewish backgrounds, from all across South Sarasota County.
The result? Big laughs, and a bigger impact.
Each day, the campers were immersed in a world of Jewish education and values, learning about blessings, holidays, and prayers, all the while playing in the sun, traveling on amazing trips, and creating new friends.
Each day at pick up, parents could be seen smiling from ear to ear, reflecting the face of their son or daughter, who would be carrying that day’s Hebrew craft. Sarah, a mother who joined our program for the first time, shared her daughter’s excitement, saying, “She couldn’t stop talking about the fire truck visit at camp! It was incredible to see her having such a great time learning about Judaism!”
But it wasn’t just the educational experiences that left an impact. Fun-filled days brought their own magic, as the trampoline park trip became an epic adventure for young Daniel, who stated clearly that he was the highest jumper. His favorite part of camp though, was Israel Day: “that was definitely the tastiest lunch, plus we learned about Israel’s coolest places. I really want to go to the Western Wall someday.”
For many, this was their first time attending a Jewish camp. It was their first real chance to explore Jewish teachings in a vibrant and engaging way. It’s no surprise therefore, that the influence of Camp Gan Israel has extended beyond the summer days.
“After camp, my daughter started asking me about lighting Shabbos candles,” shared Rachel’s mother. “I remember my grandmother doing that. But I never expected my daughter to do it! We’ve now been lighting for three weeks, and I can say that bubby was right. There’s something magical about it.”
As we reflect on this unforgettable summer, we eagerly embrace the promising year ahead. Many campers have taken the next step and registered for the Hebrew School of the Arts, where they’ll be able to continue their Jewish learning.
Our hope? With love and authentic Jewish values, the flame of curiosity and enthusiasm in these young souls will continue to grow, binding them with joy to our heritage — the heritage which they will carry into the future.
